OUR
HISTORY
Originally
deployed in 1991, this facility was not primarily
used by recreational divers. While Cancun Hyperbaric
Chamber is capable of treating a wide range of hyperbaric
injuries, our primary patient base is the commercial
lobster fishing industry in Isla Mujeres, a small
island just off the coast. Mexican divers using "Hookah" rigs
(a modified type of SCUBA system) routinely dive
deeper and longer than recreational divers in search
of lobster. Hence there is a greater propensity for
Decompression Sickness (DCS) and Air Gas Embolism
(AGE) in this population.
We also support our local recreational SCUBA DIVING community
and DIVE OPERATORS to help provide safe diving practices
and emergency care in the case of an accident.
In 1999, the SSS Network / Cancun facility started providing
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) for other kinds of illnesses
such as diabetes, gangrene, burn victims, wound healing,
and other illnesses known to respond to HBO Treatment. Our
HBO Therapy Services have been well received in the local
community as patients no longer need to travel to Mexico City
(1000 miles) for treatment. Together with our subsidized
pricing policy for needy people seeking HBO, this greatly
decreases the cost to our patients and delivers HBOT to a
population that would otherwise not have access to it.
Our chamber is adjacent to a full fledged hospital with ICU, a 24hr. ER, and a range of specialists. We can be found by taking the R-1 bus from the hotel strip
to downtown. Get off at the City Hall bus stop. Cross Tulum Ave (the main
one) and take the street where “Ultra Femme Perfumery” is
located at the corner. Follow the street to the signs of TOTAL ASSIST HOSPITAL, you’ll find our entrance just beyond the building's ambulance emergency entrance.
Chamber Tours
If
you are visiting Cancun and would like to tour our facility,
you are more than welcome! Chamber tours are free, but
we do ask that you contact us during normal business hours
by phone to arrange an appropriate time to ensure there
is no interference with any patient treatments being conducted.
ABOUT
US/COMMUNITY OUTREACH
Isla Mujeres is a major area of Lobster
fishing. The 4 fishing co-operatives here have in total
300 Fisherman / Divers. The Lobster season starts in July
and finishes in February. On average we treat about 40 fishermen
per season for DCS. Many of the fishermen lack medical insurance,
and we work closely with this community to make sure that
no diver is left untreated.
We also work to educate the fishing population on safe diving
practices in an ongoing effort to decrease the number and
severity of accidents.

OUR
CHAMBER & EQUIPMENT
The
SSS Network / Cancun Hyperbaric Chamber uses a large,
13 ft. long, 53" diameter Recompression Chamber.
It is equipped to accommodate up to two patients plus an inside
attendant, who accompanies the patients for the duration
of the treatment.
The patient and tender inside the chamber are monitored
by video cameras. Our chamber is also equipped
with High and Low Pressure "Air Banks" for air supply redundancy, extensive storage banks, and of course the large amounts of O2 necessary
for the treatments.

AFFILIATED
DIVE OPERATORS
Even though the normal patient profile
of the Cancun Chamber are commercial fishermen, we do treat
recreational divers from around the Yucatan as well. The
assistance and support of dive operators in Cancun, working
through the MHI Cancun, makes it possible
for the chamber to provide emergency recompression treatment
in the case of a diving accident.
These Dive Operators have made a strong commitment to
diving safety in the Cancun and Isla Mujeres areas. If
you plan on visiting Cancun, please visit their web sites
to learn more about them and the services they provide.
The Dive Operators are listed below in alphabetical order.
