ABOUT
OUR MHI PARTNER CHAMBERS
MHI started operations in 1987 on the Island of Cozumel.
This was at a time when Cozumel was considered one
of the most spectacular dive sites in the Caribbean
but also when there were NO functional recompression
chambers in the region. When accidents occurred,
Decompression Illness sufferers had to be evacuated
to the USA at risk to life and limb, and tremendous
private air ambulance costs. This situation changed
after MHI installed the first of several recompression
chambers in this region.
The first to Cozumel in 1987, the second to Belize in 1989 followed by a third to Cancun in 1991 and
a fourth unit to Playa del Carmen in 1995. To ensure
that MHI covered the other (west) coast of Mexico,
a chamber was also installed in Cabo San Lucas in 1993. In the year 2000 MHI expanded its Cozumel
operations in 2 significant ways. It expanded its
original location five-fold to create a full fledged
small hospital and it deployed another chamber
at a satellite location adjacent to the dock closest to the southern reefs.
Another MHI development has been the deployment
of a unit in the Yucatan’s capital, Merida in the
year 2002. This branch has now been moved to its
own purpose-built clinic which is attached to a
major hospital (Clinicas los Americas ), and has two (2) multi-place chambers.
It treats, among others, divers who explore the
cenotes or sinkholes near the archeological sites
and who otherwise are very far from recompression
treatment centers.
The latest plan is to expand into the central-southern part of Q-Roo -Having already aquired a building at the federal highway in the Tulum's town entrance. The intent is to create a manned outpost for diving emergencies, which with demand, would grow into a fully equipped hyperbaric clinic in the future.
